The Spauwer is a large, sophisticated trailing suction hopper dredger with a length of 142 metres, designed for deep water mineral mining in concession areas beyond the continental shelf. The unique features of the vessel include a large grab crane, a hydraulic sand and stone sorter, an electrically powered underwater dredger and an advanced automation system.
Mineral resources extraction
The ultra-modern vessel was developed in-house by Den Herder Seaworks, one of Northern Europe’s leading mineral resources extracting contractors. The works took place at Jansma Shipyard between June 2016 and May 2017. Following successful sea trials off Vlissingen, IJmuiden, Denmark and Germany, the vessel is on its way to start working in Spain.
Electrical outfitting and automation
Alewijnse Marine, a global player with more than a century of experience in maritime electric technology, was responsible for the complete electrical outfitting and automation on this advanced vessel. The contract included the supply, installation, connection and commissioning of all cabling, the engineering package, the manufacture and supply of the distribution boards, the reduction and conversion of the switchboards and the design, programming and commissioning of the alarm monitoring and control system and the dredging control system. Now the Spauwer is operational, Alewijnse is providing a complete 24/7 remote access and maintenance service for all the electrical systems on board.
Flexibility and cooperation
Alewijnse project manager Mitch Opmeer is delighted with the result of the Spauwer project: “We are very proud that we could once again carry out a complete electrical installation on an advanced trailing suction hopper dredger for Den Herder Seaworks. Using our professional knowledge and flexibility and closely cooperating with the customer, we managed to successfully complete this large and complex project.”
Long standing relationship
Alewijnse has worked with Den Herder Seaworks before, having successfully delivered the complete electrical outfitting of sister vessels, Scelveringhe and Swalinghe. Alewijnse was also responsible for installing all their onboard electrical systems including those for the sophisticated equipment used for mooring, dry unloading and gravel extraction.
