Full electrical installation state-of-the-art Maersk cable layer

Alewijnse Marine Systems completes full electrical installation Maersk Connector

The handover of the next-generation cable installation vessel Maersk Connector by Damen Shipyards to Maersk Supply Service marked the successful completion of a challenging assignment for Alewijnse Marine Systems. Together Alewijnse Noord and Alewijnse Marine Galati worked extremely effectively to deliver a complete electrical installation that included the electric propulsion, automation, navigation and communications packages.

The scope of the project covered every aspect of the electrical systems on board the ship, and demonstrated the range of strengths that the Alewijnse Group has to offer ship builders undertaking complex new builds and refits.

Effective international collaboration

Project management, basic design and engineering, and supervision were undertaken by Alewijnse Noord in the Netherlands, while the detailed engineering, installation and commissioning were performed by Alewijnse Marine Galati on site at Damen Shipyards Galati, in Romania. The production of the propulsion switchboard panels took place in both the Netherlands and Romania, and that of the propulsion switchboard under the direction of Alewijnse International Switchboard Production. Finally, the navigation and communications package was supplied by Admarel, the subsidiary of Alewijnse Group that specialises in bridge electronics.

Key Features

Key features of the installation included all the works for the DP2 propulsion systems with its twin, 2,100 kW thrusters, three 1,250 kW bow thrusters and one 800 kW stern thruster. Alewijnse designed the drive panels in cooperation with Siemens and installed them along with the electric motors. Alongside the electrical installation, all the facilities for the deck equipment of charterer DeepOcean together with advanced local area networks were also specified and installed.

Navigation and communication

Alewijnse also designed and built special consoles for the ship’s control, navigation and communications equipment, as well as those for the control of the deck equipment including the 7,000 tonne carousel.

“With just fifteen months from start to finish this project represented a real challenge,” commented Martin Terpstra, Manager Operations at Alewijnse Noord. “Yet the excellent cooperation between all those involved made it possible and at Alewijnse we are proud of the contribution we made to this innovative and complex vessel.”

State-of-the-art Maersk Connector

138 metres in length and with a DWT of 9,300 tonnes, the Maersk Connector extends long-term charterer Deep Ocean’s capabilities at the larger end of the cable laying market, representing a new focus on interconnector projects in addition to servicing the oil and gas and renewables sectors.
